About the AmeriCorps VISTA Program:

Since 1965, over 220,000 AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program have joined the fight against poverty by helping local organizations expand their capacity to make change. The VISTA program serves in each of the 50 U.S. States and in all U.S. territories.

Through Capacity building activities such as fundraising, grant writing, research, and volunteer recruitment, AmeriCorps Members in the VISTA program are able to gain experience and leadership skills. This opportunity prepares members for a life of service in the public, private, or nonprofit sector.

Members serving in the AmeriCorps VISTA program serve full time for one-year terms. They build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities.

Members in the AmeriCorps VISTA program are eligible for a modest living allowance of $15,002 over the year of service to cover basic expenses, health insurance, professional development training, and an end of service education award, or an $1,800 cash stipend.

Program Overview:

For nearly 44,000 children in southwestern Wisconsin, hunger is a very real feeling, with very real consequences. Children who do not receive enough health and nutritious food struggle in school and drop out at higher rates than kids who do not face hunger, experience developmental impairments, and have more social and behavioral problems. Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin has a variety of programs aimed at ensuring access to nutritious food for children and families. These programs include Kid's Cafes and Summer Meal Programs, School Food Pantries and Backpack programs.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Childhood Hunger Programs VISTA Member will analyze the best ways to build capacity of our Youth & Family Initiatives with the goal of identifying ways to intervene in child food and nutrition insecurity in our 16-county service area. Our service area has many school food pantries, kids' cafes, and backpack programs that provide school year and summer nutrition for children, however there is a need for greater understanding of which programs are best suited for which program partners.

This VISTA Member will work in collaboration with staff and community partners to assess the capacity, needs, and opportunities for utilizing various federal (Child Adult Care Food Program) and local resources at different sites. This will involve conducting research, creating criteria for program expansion, as well as expanding evaluation to help partners assess the reach and impact of child nutrition programs. In addition, this VISTA Member will work to enhance the integration of child nutrition programs into existing health programs, as well as expand eligible persons understanding of and participation in FoodShare (Wisconsin's name for SNAP benefits), through the creation of an outreach plan.


Ideal candidates will have experience with research, outreach, and relationship building. They should have effective time management and organization skills, and have the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders both internally with staff and externally with our community partners. This position will give the candidate the opportunity to learn about the root causes of child hunger, and to understand the efficacy of a variety of food and nutrition insecurity intervention methods, as well as the opportunity to build additional research and outreach skills.
