Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, southwestern Wisconsin's largest hunger-relief organization, is a non-profit organization that is committed to ending hunger in 16 southwestern Wisconsin counties. Last year, Second Harvest - together with partner agencies and programs including Mobile Pantries, School Pantries, Kid's Café's, and FoodShare (SNAP) Outreach - provided 19 million meals to help people experiencing food insecurity. Second Harvest is one of 200 members of Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity, and a leader in best practices. With revenue of $8M and a staff of 66, in FY21 the organization managed the logistics of moving more than 22M pounds of food valued at $28.6M to communities throughout southwestern Wisconsin. Second Harvest collects and delivers food five to six days a week throughout the 16 counties, working with a network of partner agencies to support those experiencing hunger. The largest of a number of fundraising events is the NBC15 Share Your Holidays campaign, held each Fall with a local television station. 2020 celebrated 25 years of the campaign and over that time it has helped provide nearly 58 million meals through monetary and food donations. The organization has stepped up efforts in the last 18 months to meet the exponential growth in food insecurity as a result of the pandemic and continues to reimagine ways to do this through a strategic, effective response across southwestern Wisconsin.

About the Opportunity

The successful candidate for Chief Strategy and Development Officer will be a proactive, motivated leader who possesses exceptional interpersonal skills and humility, and a true passion for solving food insecurity. With an increase in need, and the current COVID-19 environment, now is the time to work harder than ever to expand the organization's ability to serve the community in new and innovative ways.

The Chief Strategy and Development Officer will lead a Development team, responsible for the planning, budgeting, and execution of Second Harvest's overall development strategies, to generate funding for its programs through major gifts, corporate gifts, grants, and planned giving. With sights set high to meet elevated and ongoing needs, this Development leader and their team will work to meet an $8m fundraising goal to support important new initiatives which will ensure no one in Southwestern Wisconsin goes hungry. This individual will serve as a brand ambassador for Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, building authentic relationships with a constituency of donors.

The Chief Strategy and Development Officer will be an active part of Second Harvest's leadership team. Guided by principles of mutual respect, positive intent, collaboration and accountability, the leadership team works in tandem to build upon Second Harvest's strong foundation and to problem-solve for ever-changing community needs. The Chief Strategy and Development Officer will guide the organizational strategic planning processes to ensure Second Harvest priorities and budgets are aligned to meet the challenges of the future. They will also assist with department tactics to support the strategic priorities. Additionally, the CSDO will supervise the Research Analyst in developing processes for data collection and analysis to provide the leadership team and staff with current, accurate data to inform organizational decision-making. Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Organizational Strategy

  • Lead organization-wide strategic planning and implementation
  • Support directors in developing strategic sessions, developing tactics and metrics to align with organizational goals
  • Support directors in budget alignment to strategic initiatives and department strategies and tactics
  • Provide supervision and direction for organizational research staff.
  • Lead special projects as defined by the President/CEO

Executive Management

  • Participate on the executive management team.
  • Regularly communicate department activities and initiatives to other SHFB departments.
  • Provide support and liaison to other Foodbank constituents, Operations, Agency Services, Board of Directors, other Foodbanks, and the national office, where relevant and appropriate.
  • Work in conjunction with and communicate with Foodbank Finance department.
  • Work in partnership with the Marketing & Communications Department to strategize and leverage resources for the highest organizational development and fundraising potential.

Major Donor Stewardship

  • Build upon a successful development strategy with new ideas, clear communication of fundraising goals, and effective processes.
  • Develop and expand a portfolio of major gift prospects by building relationships for the purpose of discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Implement methods to capture and report on pertinent donor/prospect information in donor database. Ensure confidentiality and security of all donor related information.
  • Conduct and support the networking, identification, cultivation, and retention of donors.

Management of Development Team

  • Provide vision, strategic direction, mentorship, and professional evaluations & development opportunities evaluation for Development team.
  • Direct hiring, training and supervision of team members, including paid staff and volunteers/interns.
  • Support and empower team members to reach goals; lead team meetings to align team focus in order to increase effectiveness; ensure that employees have access to the resources needed to be successful.
  • Provide coaching to ensure successful performance, and utilize performance management processes as necessary, including use of proper documentation.
  • Guide and work alongside a successful development team to encourage peak performance.

Development Strategies & Implementation

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan to ensure that department meets or exceeds annual development goals through a variety of strategies including direct response, events, major gifts, grants, and sponsorships.
  • Provide regular reporting and analysis of solicitation efforts and donor activity across the development program to, but not limited to, President/CEO; Board of Directors; Feeding America; Finance Department.
  • Collaborate with development team to ensure that research on active and prospective donors is regularly conducted and analyzed. Effectively mine the existing donor database to drive the strategies and work of the development programs.
  • Work with President/CEO and Board of Directors on endowment and planned gift offerings.
  • Strengthen and expand SHFB's major gift program.
  • Proactively connect all department initiatives to strengthen outcomes and prevent duplication.
  • Manage direct response program with external vendor.
  • Develop and monitor an effective department budget.

Skills, Competencies, and Experience

  • Demonstrated leadership through an aspirational vision, clear processes, and a proactive, can-do attitude; ability to prioritize and engage staff around key objectives necessary to achieve organization goals.
  • Experience leading direct solicitation and oversight of major gifts program, fundraising events, and grant management. Extensive background directing fund development plans and activities and working 1:1 with donors.
  • Proven leadership by example and with humility; ability to motivate a team to perform to the best of their abilities; accepting of constructive feedback from others.
  • Results-oriented, strategic thinking, with the ability to collaborate and integrate initiatives with other departments. Ability to delegate work assignments, empowering team to work independently and set expectations.
  • Innovative and forward thinking; listens for emerging trends from staff and community; able to translate new ideas into action.
  • Excellent relationship building skills with ability to communicate and work effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively coach and mentor team members.
  • Ability to leverage resources within the function and across the organization to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop equitable and inclusive working relationships with staff, volunteers, funders, community partners and vendors.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 3 years of donor development supervisory leadership experience
  • Lived experience with the impacts of systemic racism or marginalization is a plus
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the following computer software programs.
    • Microsoft Office Suite – specifically Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
    • Proficient with Web Research
    • Experience with Blackbaud Raiser's Edge, including Target Analytics and ResearchPoint, desired.
